Listening to Poets, In Their Own Voices: Audio Archives for National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month, a time to celebrate the beauty and power of poetry. If you're looking to explore the world of poetry in a new way, you might want to check out some of the many poetry archives that offer audio and video recordings of poets reading their work. These archives not only provide a unique way to experience poetry, but they also offer a window into the lives and personalities of the poets themselves. In this list, we've compiled some of the top poetry archives with spoken word or audio recordings, including The Poetry Archive, The Academy of American Poets, The Library of Congress Poetry and Literature Center, PennSound, and more.

The Poetry Archive

The motto of the Poetry Archive is “connecting with the voice of poets,” so it’s the perfect site to start exploring the power of poetry as audio storysharing. This archive features recordings of poets reading their own work, as well as a selection of classic poems read by actors.

The Academy of American Poets

This archive includes audio and video recordings of poets reading their own work, as well as a variety of other resources for poetry lovers. It features a Poem a Day newsletter, so that users can start each day with a poem.

The Library of Congress Poetry and Literature Center

This archive features recordings of poets reading their own work, as well as a variety of other resources related to poetry and literature, including video and photography. Dating back to the 1940s, these recordings feature a who’s who of seminal American poets.

The Poetry Foundation

This archive includes audio and video recordings of poets reading their own work, as well as a variety of other resources for poetry enthusiasts.

PennSound

This archive features a vast collection of recordings of poets and other writers reading their own work, as well as a variety of other audio and video resources related to poetry.

The Poetry Center at San Francisco State University

This archive includes audio and video recordings of poets reading their own work, as well as a variety of other resources related to poetry.

The New York Public Library

This archive includes a selection of audio and video recordings of poets reading their own work, as well as other resources related to poetry and literature

Each archive offers a unique way to hear poets, both well-known and emerging, in their own voices. Throughout human history, poetry has been a vital tool in sharing stories, from early societies to today's spoken-word events. Celebrate this tradition with these archives this month and throughout the year.
